Stargazing at San Antonio Volcano

A window to the universe in the south of La Palma

The viewpoint of the San Antonio Volcano is located in the south of La Palma, in the area known as Cumbre Vieja in Fuencaliente. While during the daytime this viewpoint offers spectacular views of the crater and slopes of the volcano, at nighttime it becomes a window to the universe. The astronomy viewpoint of the San Antonio Volcano is further south than the clearest point for stargazing.

A viewpoint designed to find about the movement of the sun

The design and location of this viewpoint allows us to know more about the movement and the setting of the sun as it goes down with the help of some markers which show the changes of the seasons. It also has a signpost which points towards Polaris and a planisphere to help locate the constellations of the Great Bear and Cassiopeia. Situated at an altitude of 633 metres above sea level, the astronomy viewpoint of San Antonio has a visitor centre.

Sustainability
Sostenibilidad
  • Never leave waste of any type lying around, including cigarette butts. Leftover food leads to a proliferation of rats and wild cats, which pose a serious threat to the fauna.
  • Respect the animals. Do not bother them or feed them. If you see an injured specimen, you can call the emergency number: 112. Do not pick flowers or plants.
  • Do not pick up or take away stones or any other item from the natural environment. And do not move them to pile them up into sadly famous 'towers'.
  • Turn off car headlights and do not use torches. That will help minimise the light pollution of the sky.
  • If you are at an astronomical viewpoint, respect and look after the different items of public furniture (information panels, railings, seats, lighting, binoculars and telescopes, etc.).
  • Try and be silent or talk quietly. The experience will be more enjoyable.
