Mirador Astronómico La Muralla

A front seat view of the night-time show

La Palma is known for its volcanic landscapes and magical spots, but one of the best views is the night sky. The whole way around the island you can find multiple stargazing spots, such as La Muralla. In the Aguatavar neighbourhood you can gaze at the stars at night and admire the beautiful sunsets. You can also learn about its place in the mythology of the Awaras, the Prehispanic inhabitants of La Palma, and a sign that helped them find the North Star. The viewpoint is located in Recta de la Muralla, just next to the main road (LP-1) at 83km, next to a restaurant bearing the same name.

World Starlight Reserve

La Palma introduced a law to protect the island from light pollution that would interfere with the night sky, making it the first Starlight Reserve in the world and earning it the title of Starlight Tourist Destination in 2012. The island is therefore a protected natural area which strives to protect the quality of the night sky and access to starlight.

Sustainability
Sostenibilidad
  • Never leave waste of any type lying around, including cigarette butts. Leftover food leads to a proliferation of rats and wild cats, which pose a serious threat to the fauna.
  • Respect the animals. Do not bother them or feed them. If you see an injured specimen, you can call the emergency number: 112. Do not pick flowers or plants.
  • Do not pick up or take away stones or any other item from the natural environment. And do not move them to pile them up into sadly famous 'towers'.
  • Turn off car headlights and do not use torches. That will help minimise the light pollution of the sky.
  • If you are at an astronomical viewpoint, respect and look after the different items of public furniture (information panels, railings, seats, lighting, binoculars and telescopes, etc.).
  • Try and be silent or talk quietly. The experience will be more enjoyable.
