Stargazing at the Sicasumbre Observation Point

A viewpoint with a star chart and sun dial

The Sisacumbre viewing point is located in the south of Fuerteventura, in Pájara, and is an excellent place to view the skies. With ample parking and information areas there are also signs to help visitors locate the constellations, a sun dial and a vertical clock. For true astronomy addicts Sicasumbre offers the necessary supports for those of you who have your own telescopes and cameras. Don't forget warm clothes.

Nightime views of three constellations: Virgo, Bootes and Corvus

From the Sicasumbre viewpoint at just 300 metres above sea level, in the early night hours at the beginning of Spring one star is fairly easy to spot - Spica, the main star of the Virgo constellation. Close by you can see the Bootes constellation with Arcturus as its lead star and to the right of Virgo is the small Corvus constellation, characterised by its square or diamond shape.

Sustainability
Sostenibilidad
  • Never leave waste of any type lying around, including cigarette butts. Leftover food leads to a proliferation of rats and wild cats, which pose a serious threat to the fauna.
  • Respect the animals. Do not bother them or feed them. If you see an injured specimen, you can call the emergency number: 112. Do not pick flowers or plants.
  • Do not pick up or take away stones or any other item from the natural environment. And do not move them to pile them up into sadly famous 'towers'.
  • Turn off car headlights and do not use torches. That will help minimise the light pollution of the sky.
  • If you are at an astronomical viewpoint, respect and look after the different items of public furniture (information panels, railings, seats, lighting, binoculars and telescopes, etc.).
  • Try and be silent or talk quietly. The experience will be more enjoyable.
