Macayo

A district with traditional architecture

This district, located about 2km outside the village on the way to Epina, is home to a dense palm grove and a landscape and ethnographic setting associated with agricultural activities (mainly potatoes and vines). Many houses have kept the traditional rural style, made of stone and mud with gabled roofs. The corners of the traditional houses are particularly interesting as they often have protruding and irregularly shaped stone heads that catch the eye. Macayo is well known for the richness of its midlands, especially the plots in the ravine, next to one of the most impressive palm groves in the Vallehermoso basin, from which families could make palm honey, providing them with an extra source of income. Macayo’s honey was highly valued according to the old people of the village.

Sustainability
Sostenibilidad
  • Never leave waste of any type lying around, including cigarette butts. Leftover food leads to a proliferation of rats and wild cats, which pose a serious threat to the fauna.
  • Do not throw any waste or other objects into the sea.
  • Respect the animals. Do not bother them or feed them. If you see an injured specimen, you can call the emergency number: 112. Do not pick flowers or plants.
  • Do not pick up or take away stones or any other item from the natural environment. And do not move them to pile them up into sadly famous 'towers'.
  • Respect and look after the area's historic and cultural heritage, along with the different items of public furniture (information panels, railings, seats, lighting, etc.).
