Cueva de los Naturalistas

A spectacular landscape

The Cueva de los Naturalistas (Naturalists' Cave), declared a Natural Monument in 1994, is a volcanic tube with large vaults that was formed during the eruptions of Mount Timanfaya. This grotto comprises 1,600 metres of underground gallery and has a surface area of 2.1 hectares. It is located in the subsoil of the Protected Landscape of La Geria, in the centre of the island of Lanzarote and is also known as Cueva de Las Palomas (Cave of the Doves). It is a fine example of the island's valuable subsoil. Inside the cavity you can see a wide variety of forms of great beauty and scientific interest, typical of volcanic tubes.

An accessible volcanic tube

This volcanic tube is a unique and highly representative geomorphological feature, with galleries and chambers of great beauty and scientific interest. This Natural Monument is one of the most spectacular landscapes in Lanzarote. Inside the cave you can see a wide variety of forms typical of volcanic tubes such as staphyrophytes (the best preserved in the Canary Islands), cornices or lava terraces. The cave can be entered with caution and a good torch to light up the numerous small lava needles that emerge from its roof.

Sustainability
Sostenibilidad
  • Never leave waste of any type lying around, including cigarette butts. Leftover food leads to a proliferation of rats and wild cats, which pose a serious threat to the fauna.
  • Respect the animals. Do not bother them or feed them. If you see an injured specimen, you can call the emergency number: 112. Do not pick flowers or plants.
  • Do not pick up or take away stones or any other item from the natural environment. And do not move them to pile them up into sadly famous 'towers'.
  • Do not walk in areas where it is not allowed and respect the signposting along trails. Leaving the set paths causes damage to the environment and could also be dangerous for you and anyone with you.
  • Do not light fires outside the permitted areas and be especially careful during the summer months.
  • Try not to alter the peace of the environment with excessive noise (loud music, yelling, etc.).
