Marine rocks of outstanding beauty

The Tibataje Special Nature Reserve, located in the western part of the island of El Hierro, is made up of marine rocks and a large mountain ridge, which rises gradually from sea level and reaches an altitude of just over 1,000 metres. Its slopes bear witness to the coastal erosion processes that caused the coastline to recede, forming part of a rugged landscape of extraordinary biological and scenic value. It is a superb refuge for seabirds and a nesting site for a number of protected species.

Hiking through a rugged landscape

This rugged landscape has become a site of special interest on account of its beauty. It is also an ideal place for hiking, although access is not easy. The unaltered nature of the area makes this nature reserve one of the habitats of the Giant Lizard of El Hierro, a symbol of the island and an endemic species that can reach a length of up to 60 centimetres.

Sustainability

Never leave waste of any type lying around, including cigarette butts. Leftover food leads to a proliferation of rats and wild cats, which pose a serious threat to the fauna.
Respect the animals. Do not bother them or feed them. If you see an injured specimen, you can call the emergency number: 112. Do not pick flowers or plants.
Do not pick up or take away stones or any other item from the natural environment. And do not move them to pile them up into sadly famous 'towers'.
Do not walk in areas where it is not allowed and respect the signposting along trails. Leaving the set paths causes damage to the environment and could also be dangerous for you and anyone with you.
Do not light fires outside the permitted areas and be especially careful during the summer months.
Try not to alter the peace of the environment with excessive noise (loud music, yelling, etc.).
