The Montañas del Fuego arose as a result of the volcanic eruptions that hit the southern part of Lanzarote between 1730 and 1736, giving rise to Timanfaya National Park. Visiting them means being transported to a landscape that seems to be from another planet, especially because of the ocher and reddish colors generated by the intense volcanic activity. To see it from the inside and enjoy a unique experience, it is highly recommended to take the Volcanoes Route. On-board specially adapted vehicles, you can enjoy a tour where you can even feel the heat of a volcanic site that is now dormant.
A restaurant that cooks with volcano heat
One of César Manrique's most famous creations is located in the Montañas del Fuego on the Islet of Hilario: the restaurant El Diablo. The food is cooked in an oven that uses volcanic heat emanating from deep in the earth. In addition, its circular and glazed structure allows a spectacular panoramic view of the natural park. Demonstrations are held around the restaurant to help people understand the consequences of volcanic activity. One of the most famous is geysers, which are like small-scale volcanoes that arise from pouring water through pipes that go deep into the earth, causing it to come out in the form of steam.
