La Alcogida Ecomuseum

Live demonstrations of Fuerteventura’s traditional professions

In the central-north part of the island of Fuerteventura, close to the town of Tefir, you will come across an odd museum, La Alcogida. What makes it special is the fact that is it a living museum; visitors can observe artisans at work and interact with them. This ecomuseum has seven separate houses, showing seven different architecture styles of the island, from the typical peasant’s home, simple in design, to the mansions with balconies and wooden staircases, two stories high, and with tiled roofs.

Discover the way of life of Fuerteventura’s peasant

The museum lets you peer into the lives of the local peasants in times gone by, from the 19th Century until just a few decades ago. There is a good selection of local domestic livestock included, such as goats, donkeys and camels, and flora such as palms, cacti, and tabaibas, which co-exist on the arid land. You can also get to know the traditional water collection system, discover bread ovens, mills and stables.
