The largest temple in El Hierro
With three naves, a stone façade and the largest bell in the Canary Islands, the church of Valverde is known as a religious centre. Until the end of the last century it was where the church administration had its headquarters. The location collects together a number of significant artefacts from El Hierro’s history. The site is an example of 18th century baroque architecture. There is an altarpiece with the Virgin of the Immaculate Conception and a number of sacred works of art. The clock on show is French. It was donated in 1867 by Dr. Gaspar Jerónimo Quintero and each year on December 31 it announces the start of a new year to celebratory crowds.
Glimpse La Gomera from the tower
Although there are several steps to get inside, you can access the tower by wheelchair. Cars can park in a street next to the square where the grand main façade is on display. The church and the tower are included in any religious itinerary of the Canary Islands. To climb the tower it costs a euro, and from the top you can see La Gomera in the distance if the weather is good. Local restaurants in El Valverde serve excellent examples of El Hierro cuisine.
