The Best Beaches and Natural Pools in El Hierro

El Hierro has been declared a biosphere reserve by UNESCO because of its black and reddish volcanic terrain, its luscious green forest, its crystal clear ocean, and its collection of beaches which are untouched by development. What follows is a selection of some of the best beaches in El Hierro.

La Restinga

This beach is a favourite for divers who love to explore the 46 local dive sites full of a wealth of marine biodiversity. There are 10 immersion points in the La Restinga Marine Reserve which is circled by cliffs, sandy Banks, and caves. The area is an old fishing village, but these days it also frequented by families who like to swim in the calm water. The beach has an access platform for people with reduced mobility.    

Cala de Tacorón

This cove enjoys calm waters throughout the year. For this reason, many call the ocean in the area “Mar de las Calmas”, which means “Sea of Calm” in Spanish. Whilst bathing in the water the landscape around the cove offers a fabulous colour palette: there is the turquoise of the ocean, the black volcanic rocks, and the light blue sky. At low tide the cove reveals a mysterious cave. For additional swimming options, there are magnificent natural pools near the beach with a restaurant attached. The natural beauty of this beach provides a great setting for romantic sunsets. 

Charco Azul

This dreamy natural pool is located in the el Golfo valley. It is a pristine part of el Hierro and has dramatic scenery which has been formed by layers of lava created by volcanic eruptions. With some of the best sheltered azure waters in the Canary Islands, there is much to astonish in this swimming spot.   

La Maceta

The el Golfo valley has several wonderful natural pools and this is another of them. La Maceta combines the key ingredients of a Canary Islands landscape: sun, sea and lava rock. The vicinity enjoys natural pools of several different sizes and depths which makes the spot ideal for all the family. The area has a large parking area. Indeed, the popularity that this collection of natural pools enjoys is a result of the combination of easy access by car and the tireless beauty of the landscape.   

Charco de los Sargos

Charco de los Sargos is a rugged, virgin environment which is distinguished by a large cliff which meets the sea with a splash. This wild landscape is a perfect location for dreamy thoughts and relaxtion.  

Cala de Timijiraque

This beach houses the remains of some old salt flats and some ancient geological sights. It has black sand and crystal clear water. The cove is part of a protected natural area and includes an unusual seabed which makes the spot popular with diving enthusiasts. It is easy to reach by car, has a sizeable car park, and can be reached by public transport.  

Charco Manso

This bathing area is surrounded by basalt rock and comprises wells, lava caves, and a picturesque natural arch. As the sea meets the hard rock, jets of water fly into the air and create a beautiful picture. The cove enjoys crystal clear waters and calm seas.  

Tamaduste

El Verodal

The strong currents mean that swimming in this beach is discouraged, but lower visitor numbers make this area great for those that want to experience nature in an intimate setting. 

Arenas Blancas

The sand on this beach is an astonishing whitish colour thanks to the fragments of marine mollusc shells strewn across the shore. It is the only beach on el Hierro of its kind, and is worth a visit for this reason alone. The shape of the coastline on this spot is made by lava flows. There are few services available nearby, but there are rarely crowds which means this area is conducive to meditation.
