15 to 16 November
The Teatro Pérez Galdós presents 'Mariposa', a bold adaptation of Madama Butterfly by Canary Island choreographer Carlos Pons Guerra and DeNada Dance Theatre. This queer tragedy reimagines Puccini's iconic opera in a Caribbean port, where a young male prostitute and a foreign sailor experience a tragic love affair. With original music by the award-winning Luis Miguel Cobo, blending classical scores with Caribbean sounds and poetry by Karthika Nair, the work delves into the sacrifices made for love and acceptance in a setting filled with vibrant characters. Acclaimed for its innovative choreography, 'Mariposa' offers a moving exploration of identity and desire, transforming a classic story into a passionate and contemporary experience. DeNada Dance Theatre, recognized for its commitment to diversity and inclusion, has been nominated as Best Independent Company at the UK National Dance Awards.
