Climbing the Guaria ridge

Montaña Tekina, home to the longest sport climbing routes

One of the most spectacular climbing areas in Tenerife is the Guaria ridge, located in the natural reserve of Montaña de Tejina; a protected landscape in the municipality of Guia de Isora nestled in the south-west of the island. These ancient volcanic walls have the longest sports routes on the island - around 90 – although the shape of the rocks also allows a combination of sport and classic climbing with several lengths of rope, which is why it is considered one of the best places for climbing in Tenerife.

Climb in a protected landscape with an annual permit

The Guaria ridge is home to several endangered species such as the Barbary falcon, similar in appearance to the Peregrine falcon: during the nesting season access to several sections are prohibited. As the area is a protected natural landscape there are specific rules to regulate climbing, which is only allowed with an annual permit issued by the regional government’s environment agency. The best time to climb here is from March to November, as the summer months are usually rather hot.
