El Ancón beach

An exotic beach ideal for walks in the north of Tenerife

In the summer months, there are few walks along the coast of northern Tenerife that are so enjoyable, with such stunning views and with such a delightful destination. It may be smaller, but El Ancón beach in La Orotava, is by no means inferior to its adjacent sister beach, Los Patos. Located in the protected area of El Rincón, the walk down to its black volcanic sand is an incredible experience, passing through banana plantations, cliffs and the vineyards of the famous Malvasia wine. The end reward is a wonderfully refreshing dip in the ocean.

A beach with wonderful views and towering cliffs in La Orotava

To get to the beach, the best thing to do is to leave the car near the last bus stop. From there, turn right and take an easy walk – there's no risk of getting yourself lost - until reaching the pristine beach about 25 minutes away. On the way you’ll pass by an attractive house with a chapel that draws plenty of attention due to its location. Another option is to take the pathway from the adjacent town of Santa Úrsula. Once on the beach enjoy the tranquillity, the warm sand and the unique views opposite the cliffs.

  • Never leave waste of any type lying around, including cigarette butts. Leftover food leads to a proliferation of rats and wild cats.
  • Do not throw any waste or other objects into the sea.
  • Respect the animals. Do not bother them or feed them. If you see an injured specimen, you can call the emergency number: 112. Do not pick flowers or plants from the environment.
  • Do not pick up or take away stones or any other item from the natural environment. And do not move them to pile them up into sadly famous 'towers'.
  • Do not use soap or gel in the showers located at the entrance to the beach.
  • Try to use ocean-friendly sun creams.
  • Pets are prohibited at most beaches. Make sure you can take them beforehand.
  • Try not to alter the peace of the environment with excessive noise (loud music, yelling, etc.) or activities that might be bothersome, such as ball games.
