Arenas Blancas

The only beach with white sand on El Hierro

Why would it be named anything else, when what characterises this 50-metre long cove in the Parque Rural de Frontera, in the southwest, is that it is the only one with white sand on the island of El Hierro. The sand is made from mollusc shells brought by the sea currents and eroded by the waves as they repeatedly crash against the volcanic rocks of the coast. Despite its open sea bay shape and some waves, it is not dangerous and is usually a quiet beach perfect for bathers, especially for those who wish to enjoy some privacy.

An unspoilt cove for the more adventurous

Playa Arenas Blancas (White Sand Beach) is everything you would expect from an unspoilt beach: small and difficult to access for most because there is no direct public transport. Hence its exclusivity, as one has to make an effort and park the car a little further and go down the road on foot or otherwise in a 4x4. It is ideal for travellers who enjoy wild nature without the need for toilets or a beach bar, happy to prepare their own picnic and then take their waste to the nearest rubbish bin. For reference, the hospital on the island of El Hierro is located 58km away by car.

  • Never leave waste of any type lying around, including cigarette butts. Leftover food leads to a proliferation of rats and wild cats.
  • Do not throw any waste or other objects into the sea.
  • Respect the animals. Do not bother them or feed them. If you see an injured specimen, you can call the emergency number: 112. Do not pick flowers or plants from the environment.
  • Do not pick up or take away stones or any other item from the natural environment. And do not move them to pile them up into sadly famous 'towers'.
  • Do not use soap or gel in the showers located at the entrance to the beach.
  • Try to use ocean-friendly sun creams.
  • Pets are prohibited at most beaches. Make sure you can take them beforehand.
  • Try not to alter the peace of the environment with excessive noise (loud music, yelling, etc.) or activities that might be bothersome, such as ball games.
